Philipsburg, St. Maarten's Dutch capital, with colourful houses, a bustling bayside boardwalk, beachfront eateries and excellent duty-free shopping, provides an enchanting gateway to the island. Nearby, 17th-century Fort Amsterdam ruins grace a peninsula.
